Sometimes the android market seems like such a filthy place filled with poorly coded knock offs of popular games and bogged down by a plathora of half built shovelware that should cost -99c not 99c, yes i want to be paid for some of the painful rubbish I've found in there. BUT with all that said i can assure you now, there are MANY great titles to be found in there, here are some you probably missed:

'Edge'
$3 USD
Developer: Mobigame
Edge puts players in control of a grey scale cube who is apparently hungry for little rainbow blocks. You need to traverse your cube from start to finish across over 48 exceptionally crafted levels. In my honest opinion this game has the best onscreen d-pad i have ever seen or used, it just works!
The controls are simple and the isometric perspective makes a lot of sense. |
The game works like a fixed camera 3D platformer although you cant jump you must roll around the different faces of you cube making sure there is enough space for you to roll and flip through gaps and up small ledges. This game especially in the later levels offers a great depth of challenge due to its superb level design. The music is fun and 'edgy' and really lends itself to the overall mono-space theme Edge is going for. Be sure to check out the bonus stages and the sequel 'Edge Extended'. This game is also available on IOS, Linux, PSN, XBLA, Onlive and PC/MAC via steam

'Cordy'
Free (Full game $5 USD)
SilverTree Media
The Android system is definitely lacking any functional side scrolling platformers, now in my opinion there are only a very small handfull that aren't broken is actually playable. One of those is Cordy, with its beautiful graphics, crispy controls, charming atmosphere and BRILLIANT level design, this is a must have title for any side scroller fans.
A sidescroller that feels like a console game, long or short playability. |
Yes the price is quite expensive for an android game but just hold on, its actually ONLY $6.00 and its on par with full retail release games in the vein of super Mario and little big planet. The game is a 2.5D platformer where the plain you are running along curves all around the map, its never just run left > right, the map moves all around the place which breathes room for very creative levels. The DPAD is just a large left/right panel and follows your finger very accurately, on the other side there is simply a jump button, the controls really shine in this game.
