Use your Wii Remote on PC or MAC

If your like me then you love retro games and sometimes its just plain easier and less stressful to emulate them on your computer. I don't in any way endorse illegal downloading of roms or ISO's, I buy all my video games, if you emulate a game and enjoyed it, why not buy it!

Here have written the shortest guide I can to use your Wii Remote as one of the best retro bluetooth controllers around. Especially if you have a Classic or a Classic Pro. Using a Wii Remote for old NES, SNES, GBA and even Sega Master System and Genesis isn't too hard to set up and is perfect for those games. Even indie steam titles are great with this set up.

Windows Guide

Before we get started make sure your computer or laptop has bluetooth built-in or running from a usb dongle as the Wii Remote connects through bluetooth signals. Make sure your Wii Remote has batteries...

  1. Turn on the bluetooth on your computer.
  2. Make sure your bluetooth is switched on. If you do not know how to do this ether google it or try going here.
  3. Open your bluetooth wizard on your computer and select 'find devices'.
  4. On your Wii Remote press and hold the 1 and 2 buttons until you see the 4 blue light flashing at the bottom of the controller.
  5. You should see 'Nintendo RVL-CNT-01' from the discovered devices list.
Pair your computer with that device.
  6. Download 'Wiinremote' here.
  7. Unzip the downloaded file.
  8. Launch 'Wiinremote.exe' from the unzipped file.
  9. If the world is nice to you today then your Wii Remote should now be connected and you can go ahead and start mapping your buttons!

MAC Guide

Setting up a Wii Remote on MAC is far easier than windows, apple, hell yeah.

  1. Turn bluetooth on from the top menu bar of your mac
  2. Download 'DarwiinRemote' from here.
  3. Launch the 'DarwiinRemote'.
  4. Click on 'Find Remote'
  5. On your Wii Remote press and hold the 1 and 2 buttons until you see the 4 blue light flashing at the bottom of the controller.
  6. Done! Your controller is connected
  7. You can now map your buttons from the top right corner of your screen by clicking on Darwiinremote > Preferences. You can choose what type of controller to set up from here.

Have fun using your Wii Remote in new and innovative ways!

Pinobee - Gameboy Advance Hidden Gems

'Pinobee Series'
 Hudsonsoft
 2001 GBA Launch Title

Originally released exclusively on the GBA at launch in 2001, Pinobee is an action platformer from Bomberman creators 'Hudsonsoft'. The game follows the traditional run-and-jump formula we've grown to know, but its the robo-bumblebee charm and the original mechanics that shine. You play as Pinobee, an unfinished cyborg insect whose creator has been kidnapped just shy of your completion. Spanning across 9 vibrant pre-rendered worlds its up to you to charge through and save grandpa bee, your creator.

Boasting some of the glossiest pre-rendered animations on the GBA, Pinobee really stands out.

You begin the game being able to run, jump and most importantly - dash. The dash ability is the main attraction here as over the progression of the stages you increasingly level it up. Think of it as a double jump crossed with a self-projecting attack. A dash can be aimed in all 8 directions and used to reach high places or take down enemies. By the end of the game Pinobee can do more than 5 consecutive dashes, by then the challenge is quite large. As you hop across platforms and scale grassy walls you need to collect all the flowers in a level and different power ups such as boosts, shields and extra dashes.

Each world in Pinobee tests your hand eye with increasingly difficult dash-platforming level design.

Pionbee and Phoebe (J)
In 2002 a Japanese exclusive sequel was released for the GBA. There were only minor changes to the structure of the previous game. There were now many more things       to collect and players gained control of a new ally: 'Phoebe'. The graphics were also bumped up and made more colorful.

Pinobee (PS1)

2003 also saw the release of Pinobee for the Playstation 1, this is a straight port of the original GBA version over to Sony's current home console platform.

IOS / Android - Orange Pixel Studios

Orange Pixel studios make some of the most compelling, replayable pixel action platformers for the mobile market place. Available on both IOS and Android these are some of the notable games that I say we all need to atleast give a quick go, hey most of them are free so why not!

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

'Grounds Keeper'
  Side Scroller / Action

Guard the violent pixel infested graveyard, theres even a sweet soundtrack to make sure you know just how awesome you are. Extremely simple concept, all you can do is run left and right holding down the trigger on your little gun on a single rather limited screen. Enemies start spawning all around you, just keep shooting and survive at all costs.

Although the entire game is one screen, the endless incline of enemy variations makes up for that.

If you get bumped by an enemy you will loose 1 health, you start with only three. When enemies die they drop items such as hearts for health, shoot-both-ways power ups and tempory shields. As uncompelling as Grounds Keeper seems I do end up playing for about 15 - 20 minutes every now and then. Considering it costs the same as the oxygen we breath and is slightly bigger than the file size of an mp3 its not bad at all.

'Meganoid'
Platformer

The city is under attack, all the heroes have already died, so its your turn. With its one-touch-death play style Meganoid is about making your way through increasingly tougher side scrolling levels with just a virtual dpad and a jump button. Armed with nothing all you can do is avoid enemies as you aim for the exit teleporter.

Keep ripping through the stage until you could do it blind folded, reminds me of Super Meat Boy.

The controls are crisp, this type of precise platforming demands this. There are no lives and retries are unlimited which is very necessary as this game gets tough very quickly, get ready to die, a lot. The overall level design and theme is born from Megaman blood. Suits both long and short plays provided you are comfortable with touchscreen controls.

'Meganoid 2'
  Platformer
After the success of the first Meganoid Orange Pixel brought out a much deserved sequel. This time round its tougher right from the get go. Now there are many more obstacles requiring you to memorise the level and its danger patterns until you get it. There is also a talisman to find hidden in each stage too, sometimes getting these is the trickiest part on a level.

Meganoid 2 ditches its industrial future theme for a more Indiana Jones style.

The controls are tight as in the previous title in the series and this time there are more then 70 levels. Theres a lot of room for a decent amount of deaths and teeth cutting runs to the finish in some of the later stages. Looks superb on tablets and also has controller support!

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

'Gunslugs'
  Action / Platformer

The moment you start up Gunslugs its slick dudes leaping out of a plane to cause pixelated Rambo destruction down below. You rampage from left to right using virtual directional buttons while you gun down baddies and jump ledges. There are buildings to destroy, helicopters to blow up and all sorts of things to pick up. Besides health packs and ammo there are various weapon power ups you can snag, such as bigger bullets and shooting behind you while firing straight.

The amount of variety packed into each level keeps you coming back, you feel unstoppable.

There is looting to be done, almost everything you do causes coin drops which can later be spent inside certain buildings along your path. In my opinion this is the highest quality and most thought out and original Orange Pixel game in their library, truly worth paying for the add free version just to say thanks.

Jazz: Trump's Journey - Review

'JAZZ: Trump's Journey'

Android/IOS: Free (Full - $4USD)
PC MAC Steam PSN Vita
Developer: Bulkypix

Jazz: Trump's journey is a well composed playable history lesson based on the birth of jazz music. Set in the early 20's this sidescroller showcases arguably some of the tightest platformer controls I have used on a touchscreen device. They are precise, un-cumbersome and not a single time did I accidentally click up or down instead of left or right. This is because the 'up and down' controls only ever appear when you are climbing a ladder or when moving in those directions is actually possible.

Trump's setting is mystical with graphics to boot and controls like you were born playing.

It isn't long before you are thoroughly immersed in early 20th century charm complete with brick backdrops, window shutters and classy bowler hats. The intended theme is very well thought out and doesn't fail to capture attention. The sassy swing of jazz keeps you tapping your heel as you progress the story. You play as Trump, dressed in a slick tuxedo and red bow tie ripped straight out of the 20's. He wants to pull together a band and so far all he has is a trumpet player. Progressing through the stages you will find different types of musicians who will join your band, although they serve no mechanical purpose to the game, they are a nice touch that really drives you through to the end.

Charming visuals accompany the theme and breath air into a genre that's becoming stale on touch devices.
As you jump around solving puzzles by grabbing crates to reach higher places and bumping switches, you need to make good use of your time-altering trumpet. With the trumpet you can pause moving objects and use them to get across deep gaps or freeze time to navigate tricky obstacles. In each level there are 80 musical notes to collect which guide you through to the exit. There are also 10 hidden snapshots to find and collect, they are hidden away under ledges and inside secret indents in the walls. Not only do some of these collectibles test your platforming confidence they also provide real satisfaction if you manage to get 100% by the exit door.

The level design is top shelf and never just lets you simply pass-go and collect your reward. Several times even early stages I had to stop and think. Even though it was only for a moment the fact that the design of the stages was unpredictable so early is rare these days. It seems there are a whole slew of puzzle-platformer downloadable games coming out now, it can be tough to strike gold. It is unfortunate that so many of them are merely generic shovel-ware with the same characters and cookie-cutter level layouts as one another; Trump's Journey works.

Swing across gaps and jump up walls as you gather musicians for your 1920's Jazz band.

The graphical flare that this title has is some of the most original on the downloadable marketplace. Although a lot of black is used, it is used effectively. Walls are left black and contrast effectively against the paint-brush backgrounds and musical themed objects. The suit 'n' tie trumpet playing narrator pops up between stages and continues telling the tale; this accompanied by the silent-era film flicker around the screen enforces the sense you are re-living a story. The hub world is set up like an old musical theater having you spawn into the backstage area, from here doors lead to the different levels in the game, reminiscent of braid stage selection.

Although some sections of the game are difficult, checkpoints are very regular so you won't really ever be shot in the foot for taking risks. Lives are unlimited and there are no game overs, however if you paused time and arranged a crate then missed a jump, upon dying the screen is reset. Not the most painful penalty but slightly inconvenient nonetheless. Thankfully though once you grab a collectible its yours forever, you don't need to go back. Most enemies are destroyed by super-mario style head hopping which is especially destructive if you pause time, some enemies are unaffected by your trumpet and require more thought.

Jazz: Trump's Journey is riddled with engaging level design with time-pausing puzzles and brain bending originality.

Overall JAZZ Trump's Journey really is an experience, not only does the overall theme breathe life but the controls, the swish soundtrack and the graphical charm all work in harmony. What you end up with is a tightly wound clockwork of moments all bringing an enjoyable game to the stage. Great for long plays as the gameplay is compelling and non-repetitive. Also highly suitable for casual gamers to chip a little into at the bus stop; the levels are plagued with checkpoints so there's little excuse to give up and avoid that just-one-more-bite temptation.

'8/10'

Great Store - Mightyape!

www.mightyape.co.nz

Mighty Ape is a great online store for gaming goods especially if your on the search for hard to find merchandise  I highly recommend checking them out as they ship worldwide daily.

They put a lot of thought into being user friendly and let your browse items smother.

The sites layout is some of the best I've seen as it is extremely user friendly and offers a well coded 'we suggest this item based on your browsing' system that is effective. Its easy to navigate and offers a HUGE range of items aside from gaming mostly circling around all forms of pop culture

Every 24 hours they chuck up 6 different items for a highly reduced price

Mightyape's selection of games its vast and covers all current systems extensively, they also drop the price way down as games age making it a pretty good stop for early releases on consoles

Take a look, check out their games section and be
sure to check the daily deals area every day, they actually put great stuff up on there.

I am in no way a part of mightyape.co.nz all rights are reserved to the company, I believe in this product and choose to share my enthusiasm.

Android Games - Under the Radar

Sometimes the android market seems like such a filthy place filled with poorly coded knock offs of popular games and bogged down by a plathora of half built shovelware that should cost -99c not 99c, yes i want to be paid for some of the painful rubbish I've found in there. BUT with all that said i can assure you now, there are MANY great titles to be found in there, here are some you probably missed:

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

'Edge'
$3 USD

Developer: Mobigame

Edge puts players in control of a grey scale cube who is apparently hungry for little rainbow blocks. You need to traverse your cube from start to finish across over 48 exceptionally crafted levels. In my honest opinion this game has the best onscreen d-pad i have ever seen or used, it just works!

The controls are simple and the isometric perspective makes a lot of sense.

The game works like a fixed camera 3D platformer although you cant jump you must roll around the different faces of you cube making sure there is enough space for you to roll and flip through gaps and up small ledges. This game especially in the later levels offers a great depth of challenge due to its superb level design. The music is fun and 'edgy' and really lends itself to the overall mono-space theme Edge is going for. Be sure to check out the bonus stages and the sequel 'Edge Extended'. This game is also available on IOS, Linux, PSN, XBLA, Onlive and PC/MAC via steam

'Cordy'
Free (Full game $5 USD)
SilverTree Media

The Android system is definitely lacking any functional side scrolling platformers, now in my opinion there are only a very small handfull that aren't broken is actually playable. One of those is Cordy, with its beautiful graphics, crispy controls, charming atmosphere and BRILLIANT level design, this is a must have title for any side scroller fans.

A sidescroller that feels like a console game, long or short playability.

Yes the price is quite expensive for an android game but just hold on, its actually ONLY $6.00 and its on par with full retail release games in the vein of super Mario and little big planet. The game is a 2.5D platformer where the plain you are running along curves all around the map, its never just run left > right, the map moves all around the place which breathes room for very creative levels. The DPAD is just a large left/right panel and follows your finger very accurately, on the other side there is simply a jump button, the controls really shine in this game.
